Riley Awards $500,000 to Build Meeting Centers in Marion County
MONTGOMERY
For many years, residents in two Marion County towns have sought large meeting facilities for their communities.  Now they are getting their wish fulfilled thanks to grants awarded by Gov. Bob Riley. Riley awarded $250,000 each to the towns of Bear Creek and Hackleburg to construct new facilities.

The Bear Creek grant will be used to build a community center while funds to Hackleburg will be used to construct a building that will serve primarily as a senior center. Both grants are funded with money the state receives through the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

“The buildings financed by these grants not only will meet important needs, they will be a source of pride and add to the sense of community in each town,” Riley said. “I am pleased to support each of these projects.”

The 3,000-square-foot center in Bear Creek will include a 40-by-50-foot assembly room and two smaller meeting areas. The project also includes a 2,000-square-foot basement-level “safe room” that is being funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The safe room will harbor residents during severe weather.

Hackleburg will build a 3,000-square-foot facility will enable the town to establish a senior citizen program that provides weekday lunches and offers social and recreational activities.

Riley notified Mayors Drennon Veal of Bear Creek and Doug Gunnin of Hackleburg that the grants had been approved. Bear Creek is providing an additional $65,000 for their project while Hackleburg is supplementing their grant with $70,000 in local funding.

Riley awarded the grants from funds provided to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  He has designated the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to administer the grants.
